News Summary

A measure intended to aid Indiana cities and help Indianapolis fund its sports facilities calls for doubling the state's tax on alcohol, the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette reported April 2.

The measure, sponsored by Rep. Randy Borror, a Fort Wayne Republican, was attached to a House appropriations bill. In addition to helping the state's largest city pay for facilities for the Colts and Pacers, the measure would deliver millions in economic-development aid to other Indiana cities, including $2.6 million to Fort Wayne.

The plan calls for adding 26 cents per case of beer in taxes, 9 cents per bottle of wine, and 53 cents per fifth of liquor. Backers say the tax increase would raise $42 million annually. Alcohol taxes in Indiana haven't been raised since 1981.

Not a large enough increase to effect anyones habits. Just an underhanded why for the government to get more out of our pockets. Coming from a Repub kind of surprises me

Good luck to them. I hope they can get it passed. They will get a big fight from the alcohol lobby. It is time more states did this.

It is just one more way to get more tax money. Why don't you: 1) try getting tax money from all the people who, for one reason or another, do not pay their fair taxes 2)work on the welfare system to avoid using our tax money to give assistance to people who are fraudulently receiving welfare money and/or food stamps. I could list several other ways to generate more money for the state, but I only have 200 words!!

Why not legalize pot and put a tax on it !! It would be another thing to make money on with the taxes on it !If a person chose to grow his own you could be the ones selling the seeds and tax it at the time of sales ! There is nothing wrong with smoking pot and you know it ! I myself think it would be a good thing along with half of the people in the states !Let make the choice of weed or booze ! I would rather smoke after work than drink! I can function after smoking! When will we have a say in what is better ?
