Illinois Considers Upping Penalties for High-Potency Marijuana

News Summary

Legislators in Illinois are considering a bill that would increase penalties for marijuana containing high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the Chicago Sun Times reported June 13.

The bill would increase penalties for sale or distribution of marijuana that contains more than 15 percent THC, the plant's main psychoactive ingredient.

"The amount of THC that teenagers are being exposed to is very different than the marijuana you may have run across in the 1960s or 1970s," Rep. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) said.

Bill opponents fear that the legislation would create problems for medical-marijuana patients.

"He's saying we want you to use the lower grade stuff -- so you have to smoke more just to get the same amount of relief," said Bryan Brickner, a co-founder of the Illinois chapter of the National Organization to Reform Marijuana Laws.

It is about time that someone took the other side of this issue and we get back to what really needs to be done with this insidious drug. Of course, NORML would be against it. Go Illinois, Legislature!!!

If that's the case then Illinois should also increase penalties for drinks being sold with higher alcohol content as well. Talk about an insidious drug: because it is currently legal, people who use it are socialized to believe that it is ok to use above any other substance, even in higher concentrations! Does this mean Illinois won't recognize the equalization of mandatory minimum sentences for crack versus powdered cocaine possession? Illinois may be farther behind the times than previously thought.

Looks like another power grab by those manufacturers and sellers of testing equipment and prisons.

I just smile over this stuff. Pass a law that has no teeth. What is it going to be $105 dollar fine instead of the normal $100 dollar fine. I like how the weed smokers always compare the issue to alcohol or tobacco. I just laugh. Don't they see we are against those drugs as well. Stay Sober!

US Rep. Kirk was roundly ridiculed on websites for this fraudulent claim about the dangers of "dreaded skunkweed" which also moved lameduck PM Gordon Brown to change the category of cannabis from "B" to "C" (look it up). As Brickner notes, higher THC content means less smoking-- and less CARBON MONOXIDE. The cigarette companies (who feed plenty of money to political parties) have every reason to fear stronger cannabis because it trains cannabis users to switch from hot-burning joints to one-hitters, vaporizers etc. which, if imitated by cigarette addicts, dooms the Big 2Wackgo gross sales volume based on OVERDOSE!

One thing I agree on is to legalize Marijuana for these simple reasons only... Many of our youths who are standing on the corners selling will not be dying over one less drug in the streets... $$$$$ will be save on building more prisons/jails,housings.because we know there is more drugs/weed in the cells,,, as it is on the corners in the U.S....Many other countries will be out of business, due to the fact it will no longer be in great demand here. As far as potency, If it was legal, every one who smokes would be growing it in their own back yard on in their own house, so you would not have to worry about upping penalties, They could be more focused on how to STOP CUTTING $$$$$$$ IN MENTAL HEALTH/ADDICTIONS, AND GIVE US OUR PROPS IN INTERVENTION AND PREVENTION. HOW ABOUT UPPING FUNDS TO INCREASE REHABILATION FOR OUR WEED SMOKERS.... THIS IS AN EVERLASTING BATTLE AND GUESS WHO'S WINNING! CUTTING FUNDS, PEOPLE LOSING THEIR JOBS IN MENTAL HEALTH,AND ADDICTIONS, GUESS WHO'S LOSING.... I am not codoning selling or usinging, but this is a war right here in the streets of the U.S.....$$$$ is being spent as I speak on machines to increase growth on what was growing under water... I wonder who came up with this idea...which means increase growth, will increase sells in the streets... which means $$$$ spent on increase overtime for police.....it is an everlasting battle.....rich getting richer/poor getting poorer......
