News Summary

The annual death toll from use of Afghan heroin in NATO countries exceeds the total number of deaths among the troops of these nations during the entire course of the Afghan war, according to a new report from the United Nations.

CNN reported Oct. 21 that the U.N. said the biggest global threat from the Taliban is, by far, the drugs created from Afghan opium poppies, which the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime said is responsible for 100,000 deaths each year worldwide.

The $65-billion global market for heroin, opium and morphine also helps fund terrorist and insurgent operations, including up to $600 million annually for the Taliban.

Law-enforcement seizes only about 20 percent of illicit opiate traffic, according to the report, Addiction, Crime and Insurgency: the Transnational Threat of Afghan Opium.

Antonio Maria Costa, head of the U.N. office that produced the report, said that solution is clear: "We need a much greater effort and commitment by governments to prevent drug addiction, to take care of drug addicts ... to reduce demand," he said.

I am sorry Mr. Costa does not consider the past history of the US since 1970 suppressing the hashish trade, with some help from the Soviets along the way, resulting in this heroin plague. What about legalizing cannabis, sending advisors to help farmers shift from opium to both industrial and inspirational hemp, and inviting a million or so unemployed young Afghans to do useful work in California such as raise hemp, and also to clip and pick biofuels from drought zones eliminating billion dollar fires?

Yes lets creat more industry on the back of addiction. There is better life without drugs.

I heard that Afghanistan's income from the heroin trade amounts to $ 1.7 or so billion. Creating addicts here, in this country, and destroying our society that way, makes things a whole lot easier for the Taliban. What no one seems to mention is the annual income of drug companies in the US from opioids (which all come from the same poppy fields - right?) Purdue pharma makes $ 2 BILLION per year - mostly from OxyContin - creating their own generation of addicts and devastating families and communities everywhere. Our very own legal drug traders and dealers. Which is worse - our enemies killing our young people - or our own businesses destroying our society - JUST FOR THE MONEY!

With these kind of awful statistics, why, in heaven's name are we wasting time and resources on cannabis suppression? It seems there should be an international effort to encourage people to switch from opiates, tobacco and alcohol consumption, to cannabis. Can you imagine the number of lives it would save/
