News Summary

Gun-owners can now legally carry their weapons into Arizona bars. The only catch: they can't drink.

The Associated Press reported Sept. 29 that a new law allows concealed weapons in establishments that serve alcohol, if bar or restaurant owners agree. Those who don't may post signs saying that guns are not welcome.

Even if they are allowed in, gun-carrying patrons are not allowed to drink alcohol under the Arizona law.

The law was backed by the National Rifle Association, which says that similar laws now are in place in 41 states.

This is RIDICULOUS!!! Do you really think that a bartender is going to ask each patron if he is carrying a concealed weapon before he serves him a drink? This is a return to the old west mentality where everybody "needed" to carry a gun.

Sorry Diane, to a point it IS understandable.Guns and alcohol do NOT "mix" well. The more alcohol drinken, the tougher the drinker feels, and then they have to show the world, and prove it."Alcohol-Stupidity". You can't even be safe in some churches anymore. We've had 2 shootings in the past couple of years in seperate churches here. To stop would be assasins, and save innocent lives, Police or Armed Security, had to shoot-to-kill the agressores, in each situation. Can't even be safe in Gods' house.Armed-Security in a church? What a sorry way for us to have to live.God must be crying now! Our society has taken a "nose-dive" and many would NOT know common courtesy and respect for the next person, if it bit them on the nose.A gun in THIS situation,-a bar-,would cause more trouble then needed. The other side of the same coin? Having a gun, if someone tries to rob the place, or you? People take their "troubles" to a bar.Where some go to enjoy themselves, others go to try to drown their sorrows.Guns make some think they are "bullet-proof", and can whip-the-world, if the next person looks at them wrong.Either way of looking at this, a gun does not help.Yes,-I AM retired law-enforcement, and have seen both sides of this. Not an easy solution here.

Seriously, how many people walk into a bar just to order a glass of water or a cup of coffee? And why would anyone need to carry a gun into a bar or a restaurant anyway unless they were planning to make mischief? If the establishment is in a dangerous neighborhood where someone might feel the need to carry a gun for self-defense, then use some common sense and DON'T GO THERE. I have to agree that guns and alcohol don't mix well, it's like throwing a lighted match into a tinderbox.

This is a ridiculous law! Arizona is definitely became a haven for alcoholism (my drinking didn't start til I moved here). I'm glad I'm sober now and wished to ban alcohol from most establishments in the future. Alcohol and guns do not mix and eventually, I can see some murders happening at bars more often now. What a shame that Arizona has sunk so low!! Shame!

I carry a sidearm and I am empowered to do so under the law by permit. I feel safer that I may now carry my personal method of self defense against another's deadly force into a restaurant that serves alcohol. It is not the patrons I worry about. It is the idiot that comes in and just starts shooting the place up because he is mad at the world or ... fill in the blank. It has happened before, in good neighborhoods. It will likely happen again, in other good neighborhoods. Will it happen at a restaurant I patronize? Statistically, I'm sure the chances are pretty low, but the chances of winning the lottery are low too. Yet someone eventually does. Life is the result of the sum total of the choices we make. So, so long as I am obeying the law by not drinking and have the proper permit, I will exercise my right to be prepared for the worst so that my family and I are not just other ducks in a gallery when the demented chose to pay a visit. Your free to chose the role of duck, should you so desire.
