News Summary

Amid a growing epidemic of prescription-drug abuse, some lawmakers are looking to stem the flood of television ads for prescription medications, the New York Times reported July 27.

The pharmaceutical industry spends billions of dollars annually advertising their products directly to consumers, but Rep. Jerrold Nadler's (D-N.Y.) Say No to Drug Ads Act would eliminate the tax deductions for such ads. Meanwhile, Rep. James P. Roan (D-Va.) is seeking a ban on sexual aids like Viagra, citing decency standards for prime-time TV, and Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) wants to give the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) power to ban ads for new drugs for a period of time until the marketplace demonstrates that they are safe and effective.

"You should not be going to a doctor saying, 'I have restless leg syndrome' -- whatever the hell that is -- or going to a doctor saying, 'I have the mumps,'" said Nadler. "You should not be diagnosed by some pitchman on TV who doesn't know you whatsoever."

The Pharmaceutical Researchers and Manufacturers of America, an industry trade group, said previous attempts to ban such ads have foundered on free-speech concerns. The U.S. and New Zealand are the only nations in the world that allow direct-to-consumer ads for prescription drugs.

"On First Amendment grounds, I am not going to say we will ban" the ads, said Nadler. "But they should not be able to get taxpayers to subsidize it."

Perhaps if the pharmaceutical companies would stop spending billions on advertising, their drug costs would be more reasonable. The

It's about time! Why is it other companies get banned for their advertising, but Big Pharma can't? It needs to be banned. I am tired of the ads and I am tired of hearing the money spent on it!

The ads do not even reveal how many deadly side effects and deaths occur, while attorneys know it worthless to go to court against Big Pharm. co who fast track drugs for profit. The U.S Senate says frivolous lawsuits, HOWEVER IT COMES FROM THE MOUTHS OF THOSE WHO DO NOT RECIEVE THE SAME TREATMENT AS THE PUBLIC DOES. We have all become human test animals for profit. Good doctors can no longer be doctors, while others are rewarded for killing patients. Politicians took over medicine over a decade ago, wake up America. Pay to Play has hit the Medical field while the Public has got to bury loved ones due to Pharmacutical fraud. N.J IS THE BIGGEST OFFENDERS OF HIDING DEATHS . Thw nations largest Ponzi scam is located in N.J, AND IS WELL PROTECTED BY CORRUPTION. Madoff is only the tip of it. Corruption in N.J COST THIS NATION DEATH. THE PUBLIC IS NOT BEING BAILED OUT, THE DRUG COMPANIES ARE AND OUR TAX DOLLARS ARE GOING TO PAY FOR MORE DEATH. N.J NEEDS A GOVERNOR WHO IS NOT TIED TO BIG DRUG COMPANIES, WE ARE DOOMED EVEN BEFORE THE NEXT ELECTION COMING UP IN NOV, WHEN BOTH PARTIES ARE FOUND TO BE CORRUPT BEFORE THEY EVEN GET IN. OUR CHILDREN ARE DEAD, WHILE AUTOSPY IS FALSIFIED. HOW MANY STATES ARE DOING THIS ?

I have always thought the advertisement of prescription drugs on television to be a bad idea. Our society is over-medicated and we don't need this constant annoying propaganda that encourages to pop pills to cure everything. Furthermore the ads are just driving up the costs of medications which were ridiculously expensive to begin with. This sort of thing needs to be reined in.
