FDA Calls e-Cigarettes Toxic, Warns Against Use

News Summary

Electronic cigarettes, touted as a smoke-free and less-harmful alternative to smoking, contain toxic and carcinogenic chemicals, according to tests conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

CNN reported July 22 that the FDA said that e-cigarettes, which vaporize nicotine and other chemicals to allow for inhalation, have not been approved for human consumption, are potentially appealing to children, and are the subject of dubious safety claims. "The FDA is concerned about the safety of these products and how they are marketed to the public," said FDA Commmissioner Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D.

The FDA analysis found that the devices contained diethelene glycol, a toxic chemical found in antifreeze, and nitrosamines and other carcinogens.

"We know very little about these devices, but to say they are healthy -- that's highly doubtful," said Jonathan Samet, director of the Institute for Global Health at the University of Southern California.

"It is very important that parents let their children know [e-cigarettes] are not safe and to make recommendations, or even enforce rules that they not be used," added Jonathan Winickoff, chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Tobacco Consortium.

uhh, aren't regular cigarettes MORE toxic and harmful? why isn't the FDA banning those? maybe it's cause 1/2 the FDA smokes themselves?

Officials from the FDA and CDC defended and protected smoking, secondhand smoke and cigarette markets by intentionally misrepresenting the scientific evidence (including their own test results) on nicotine inhalers (aka electronic cigarettes) in an outrageous attempt to scare smokers from switching to these far less hazardous alternatives. Whiel the FDA's tests confirmed that electronic cigarettes emit 99.9% fewer chemical constituents than combusted cigarettes (similar to what FDA approved nicotine gums, lozenges and patches emit), the FDA and CDC claimed the products are unsafe because they emit dangerous "toxins" and "carcinogens". And while no youth or nonsmoker has ever become addicted to e-cigarettes, the FDA press conference falsely alleged that these products are target marketed to youth, and are gateway drugs. This is the most egregious misrepresentation of scientific evidence in the FDA's history, as the FDA is has just encouraged smokers to continue smoking instead of switching to a far far less hazardous nicotine alternative.

The only reason the FDA got involved is pay off money from the manufacturers of Nicorette the patch etc. They are another Pay to Play administration. A pox on them all.

In re Mr. Winickoff's remarks about e-cigarettes and children, it is widely acknowledged that under the Status Quo at least half of all nicotine addicts are hooked before reaching legal age to smoke (as the President observed describing his own case). I hope Bill (above) will get busy with his emailmachine and keep the FDA busy! Meanwhile, the unspoken basis of their fears may be that pretty soon cartridges containing THC instead of nicotine will be everywhere, too late to stop it; the cigarette industry will suddenly CRASH and with it (a) a ton of tax money will disappear that politicians need for their most popular programs, including paying salaries of FDA officials; (b) lucrative cigarette-caused diseases will disappear that Big Pharma needs to sell its blood-pressure meds etc., (c) the car industry will crash as THC-e-cig-users switch from car to bike, (d) obesity and weight-loss industry will disappear together overnight. I could go on. By the way, as opponents complain that Obama's health reform will cost $1 trillion in ten years, I remind everyone of Patrick Petit (WHO, Feb. 7, 2008) saying the tobacco industry costs the US economy $180 bil. every year. Do the math!

Only fools, morons and Big Tobacco shills would defend the industry or any of its products. Like Big Alcohol, the products they push are dangerous, leading to sickness, disease and death which we all pay for. Anonymous got it right, if you do the math, the only winners are the profit loving corporations who benefit while the rest of us suffer.

I am absolutely convinced that this is all about Big Tobacco and Pharmacy money! How could this possibly be worse than smoking tobacco cigs with all the crap the filters are made of ect? As someone who is facing early signs of emphysema, anything that will lower my risk while I continue attemping to quit, is welcome. (Yea, dumb I know, but such is the addiction)

I know many people who have successfully cut their smoking in half by using the e-cigarette. That is far more successful than those who use the pharmaceutical patches, gum and lozenges which are 98.4% ineffective after one year. I do believe that Big Pharma wants to eliminate any competition which will effect their bottom line. To those in tobacco control this is not about health but about money.

WHo cares what the FDA thinks anyway, they have no control over us Californians, just ask the Medicianl Marijuana folks. We can still legalize those e-cigarettes here. We will get some really sick people to justify em and then we will write the laws so we can't be prosecuted. The pot smokers are doing all the hard work by trying to keep the feds out of our state.

Well as a non-smoker myself I thought using e-cigars would give me a certain cool factor I felt I was missing...now knowing that the vapor may be harmful, I think I will just save my money and get a fake tatoo instead.
