News Summary

Autopsy results are not yet in on pop icon Michael Jackson, but Obama administration drug czar Gil Kerlikowske is already citing the singer's death as a cautionary tale about prescription-drug abuse.

CNN reported July 9 that Kerlikowske said in an interview that "the very sad and untimely loss of Michael Jackson is a wake-up call to the country about prescription drugs.

"I really don't know anything more than I have read about this," Kerlikowske told CNN. "But if we can save lives and if we can bring to the attention of the people the dangers of prescription drug abuse, I think there is some benefit to this country."

Kerlikowske said that prescription-drug overdoses kill more Americans annually than gunshot wounds, and that they keys to prevention include engaging parents to talk about the problem, state monitoring of prescriptions, and a national media campaign warning of the dangers of misuse.

A general anesthetic, profolol, was found in Michael Jackson's home. This is a drug that should never be administered outside of a medical setting where surgery is performed. It is quite likely that that is what killed Michael. The doctor who administered that anesthetic may well be resposible for his death. It is also of note that Michael did take many pills and the doctors who precribed so much medicine to him are also to blame. Michael should have known better, I suppose, but if doctors were prescribing meds to him, he may have rationalized that it was ok. I do see him, however as something of a victim. Taking 40 tables a day of Xanax is just dangerous and his doctors should have gotten him to detox.

IF THE TOXIC REPORTS DO COME BACK ON MICHAEL JACKSON AS ASBUSE OF PERSCRIPTION DRUGS, I HOPE THAT PEOPLE WAKE UP TO THE DANGERS OF MISUSING AND DEPENDENCE ON THEM. HOW MANY PARENTS, KIDS AND GOOD HIGH PROFILE PEOPLE HAVE TO DIE BEFORE THE COUNTRY AND THE WORLD WAKE UP TO PERSCRIPTION DRUGS MISUSE DANGERS.

I think it will come out that he was trying to kick by using profolol to induce coma to go through withdrawl.

The whole situation is very sad, but after the many reports of prescription abuse -- it's not that complicated. Michael was struggling with addiction, like so many others in our country. The only difference is that he had more resources to acquire his drugs than most addicts. I am of Chair of PREVENT! a coalition in Vancouver, WA, and we are working hard to get the word out to the community and parents about prescription drugs. I lost a son to an accidental overdose. When I shared his story with some high school students, they told me they didn't know mixing substances could cause you to die. We have lots of work to do!

they (sic) keys to prevention include engaging parents to talk about the problem... uhhh "parents"? so this is a "only kids OD" issue now? i know jackson was weird with the kids but he was NOT A KID. and neither was heath ledger and many of the other ADULTS that OD on prescription drugs. lets stop blaming the kids all the time shall we.

It's a shame that MJ died but please let's not put all the blame on the doctors and call him a "victim" of drug abuse. You don't have to be a genius to figure out that taking 40 Xanax a day is dangerous.

Will the truth ever be known about MJ death? The important fact is there is millions who are still out there suffering in their drug/alcohol addictions. Addiction is cunning, baffling and powerful.MJ was a child of God so lets focus on how we can help other addicts find thier way to freedom from this ugly disease.

How quickly the MJ OD went underground and is hardly seen in the news. Amazing how our society handles information of drug deaths and famous people, even the common folk when it is this subject matter. When will our nation take drugs and alcohol abuse/use serious for its dangers?

Hello! 40 xanax a day? How stupid was Jackson? I guess just about as stupid as Elvis Presley. When you're a hard core addict, any excuse is good enough and the fact that an MD was providing the drugs would certainly qualify. Pity!
