Denver Newspaper Seeks Marijuana Critic

News Summary

Many newspapers have food critics or even wine critics, but an alternative weekly in Denver is tapping into the interests of its own audience demographics by seeking a critic to review the city's medical marijuana scene.

CBS News reported Oct. 5 that the Westword weekly newspaper is looking for someone to write about medical-marijuana dispensaries in the Denver area as part of its "Mile High and Lows" column.

"It is the wild west of medical marijuana out here," said Westword Editor Patricia Calhoun. "There were a couple of dozen dispensaries this spring, and now it's over 100. We just heard there's going to be a drive-through dispensary."

So far there are no plans to review marijuana quality -- just the overall experience at the dispensaries -- but that could change. Candidates for the writing job need to have a medical need that allows them to legally acquire marijuana.

"We want to see what kind of place it is, how well they care for you and also how sketchy the place is," Calhoun said. "Do they actually look at your medical marijuana card? Do they let you slip some cash under the counter and bypass the rules?"

Hope they find a readable writer who is also sick enough to qualify under what may be draconian laws to acquire herb samples. This expert should also be knowledgable about vaporizers and, when available, e-cigarettes with THC-formula, because rolling up any herb, good or bad, in a hot-burning thc-destroying spliff is the second worst mistake in the lexicon of cannabis users.

and what is the problem? The community should know if they have legit businesses operating in their community and not drug dealers out to make a buck.

Isn't there an agency, legal or government, which controls, inspects, polices, these clinics? It's rather scary that they say it's the "wild west of medical marijuana out there" and that they went from a couple of dozen to over 100 clinics in such a short time, or at all. There cannot be that many people who would legitimately need medical marijuana to warrant over 100 clinics I wouldn't think. I feel the legalization of so-called medical marijuana is a major mistake - and especially if it's not tightly controlled.

Wow! I didn't realize that marijuana was that big of an issue back in Colorado. I live in the middle of the emerald triangle and even we don't have a cannibus club critic. But like most businesses, cannbus clubs want to make a buck. Legalize marijuna and pull the country out of the econmy funk, thank you

I don't think the government will legalize marijuana anytime soon. I can't even get Medicare to pay for my anti-anxiety medications because the government is so stupid they believe that everyone who uses benzodiazepines is a junkie. And yet Medicare will gladly pay for evil drugs like olanzepine which causes diabetes. The government is very concerned about its image with regard to mind-altering substances; i don't think they would want America to be seen as a nation of stoners.

It's to late Instead of people getting stoned on something natural they're getting stoned on man made prescription drugs that all have side affects. The gov loves that!!!It makes them rich
