News Summary

College students should stop playing beer pong and sharing drink cups in order to prevent the spread of the H1N1 (swine) flu this fall, a New York school advises.

The Associated Press reported Oct. 13 that health officials at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) said that several H1N1 cases on campus have been traced to a group of students who shared drinks during a weekend that included drinking games.

The school has reported 21 cases of swine flu, with seven students placed in isolation while they recover from the illness.

H1N1 is undoubtedly a concern for our nation, and all precautions should be taken to prevent the spread of the virus. However, I feel we are missing an obvious point, and that is college students, most of whom are under the legal drinking age of 21, are engaging in drinking games. Furthermore, university and health officials have knowledge of it. These officials need to be concerned about the consumption of alcohol by their university students. Drinking games are designed to consume large amounts of alcohol - a danger in and of itself. With drinking game names such as: Brain Damage; Circles of Death; and Absolutely Hammered, there is more to be concerned about than just H1N1.

If H1N1 is what it takes to get young people, then I guess I'v heard the first good thing about Swine Flu. How can educators simply accept that their students are at risk, playing these deadly games, and not try to teach about the risk, the law, and dead friends. Let's lable the games what they are, lethal. The industry needs to address the mis-use of deadly chemicals.

Dwayne have you ever heard a song called Eve of Destruction by Barry Mcguire. It was a Vietnam political protest song and it says "You're old enough to kill but not for drinking."When I bartended some military guys brought a young man(minor) who was going to Iraq;I served him.
