News Summary

Alabama Gov. Bob Riley has approved legislation allowing beer with higher alcohol content to be sold in restaurants, bars and some retail stores, the Associated Press reported May 22.

The legislation raises the legal alcohol limit on beer from 6 percent to 13.9 percent by volume, allowing previously banned specialty and imported beers to be sold in the state.

"We've been working this for over four years," said Stuart Carter, president of Free the Hops, a grassroots advocacy organization. "I'm shell-shocked from hearing the news."

Rev. Joe Godfrey, executive director of Alabama Citizen Action Project, said he was disappointed by Riley's approval of the bill. "It's further evidence our society is totally absorbed in alcohol consumption," he said.

Bill proponents defended the legislation, saying beer with higher alcohol content won't appeal to those drinking to get drunk since specialty beers are more expensive than more common brands.

In response to the Bill proponents, the price would have to be more than twice as expensive to deter the "drinking to get drunk" crowd, because there is more than twice as much alcohol. One beer of the higher priced- higher content, will equal more than two regular price-lower content. I hope that it is a pretty hefty dollar sign if that is your defense.

Score another victory for the alcohol and tobacco advocates (lobby). This new law will further increase our health care costs and deaths by drunk drivers. Most informed citizens understand that the bulk of health care costs are the result of our unhealth life styles, this is just one more bad decision on the part of government (state in this case) that "helps" individuals make bad life style decisions, which we all will pay for ultimately.

Are these beers still sold in 12 ounce serving sizes? I'd be very cautious about that because wine at 13.9% alcohol would be 5 oz per serving. It takes a lot more time to drink 2 glasses of wine than it does 1 beer. People will be consuming much more alcohol in a much shorter time and may not even be aware of it.

CSironen... where do you come up with your math? 13.9% of 12oz. is approximately 1.668oz, not the 5oz that you state. Common sense would tell you that 5oz is almost 6oz, which is 50% of the serving.
