Advocates Call on 'Tween Stores to Stop Selling Flasks

Advocates for preventing underage drinking are calling on the teen accessory store chain, Icing by Claire's, to stop selling girl-friendly flasks the Chicago Sun Times reported Jan. 23.

Flasks decorated with charms and designed to hold 5 ounces of liquor are available for $12.50, and one-shot keychain flasks with room for the individual's initials are available for $8.50 each.

The flasks show disclaimers that the product is not meant for minors, and warns that the flasks are designed to carry alcoholic beverages and should not be used for beverages with acidic contents like fruit juices.

Advocates are concerned that Icing by Claire's is encouraging underage drinking by selling flasks, while targeting its products to girls as young as 17. Icing by Claire's is a subsidiary of Claire's, Inc., which operates approximately 3,000 stores throughout the U.S. and Europe.

Recent studies show that girls are drinking earlier and increasing their alcohol intake. For example, the rate of 14-year-old girls using alcohol escalated from one in ten to almost one-third over the last 40 years. "In many cases, the girls are outdrinking the boys, putting themselves at greater risks," said Janet Williams, co-chairman of the Illinois Coalition to Stop Underage Drinking, which wrote a letter to parent-company Claire's.

It appears that youth are gravitating towards hard liquor like rum and tequila in an effort to get drunk faster, according to Elizabeth Nelson, a community health specialist at the Lake County Health Department.

"Anything that promotes the perception that alcohol use is acceptable with young people is really disturbing," Nelson said.

Oregon Partnership announced that Icing by Claire's said it will continue selling the flasks at its 3,000 stores, but will post signs at store counters supporting "responsible" alcohol consumption.

With our teens already at risk for alcohol use, where is the conscience of Claire's (teen accessories outlet)going?

Thank you for publishing this article. Make sure your friends with teens know about these and recognize what they are for. Does Claire's have a plan for flowered and sparkly roach clips next? My daughter won't shop there with my money.

This is a clear case of making a profit at any cost. How selfish can Claire be? Profit over accountability, that must be thier motto. Well I will not be letting any of my family shop there and will try to discourage other families from shopping there also. E-mail them at customerservice@claires.com. I'm a manager at an Icing and everyone needs to chill out we id anyone that buys these flasks and know that minors are not to purchace and Icing is a grown up version of claires and we DO NOT PROMOTE UNDERAGE DRINKING AND IT DOES NOT warn that the flasks are designed to carry alcoholic beverages and should not be used for beverages with acidic contents like fruit juices. It specificly says "not intended for minors" There are more important things in this world going on then to worry about something that we have control over

I disagree with Christina. Posting "not intended for minors", or for that matter "The flasks show disclaimers that the product is not meant for minors, and warns that the flasks are designed to carry alcoholic beverages and should not be used for beverages with acidic contents like fruit juices." should work about as well as saying something like..."do not crush" worked to keep people from abusing oxycontin. Those aren't warnings...they are directions! Hopefully, when an underage girl suffers a consiquence while using your product, some nice attorney will be able to help ya'll understand what your store SHOULD have been doing all along.

Christina-No we can't truly control underage drinking, but we can sure as hell not promote it either. Young girls already want to appear older and sophisticated and I know of few "grown ups" that shop there.

My colleague went to a local Icings in IL and one of the employees said that she refused to sell the flasks to people under 21. She was then scolded by her manager for doing that and had to start selling them to everyone. The warning may not be on the keychain sized flasks, but a reporter read us the warning that was on the regular sized one she purchased. I hope if we put enough pressure on Claire's they will pull the product. We were successul with Spykes!

Well that manager is an idiot cause they are supposed to card customers when trying to buy them, And I agree with Christina it does not say anything about the fruit juices

What a deplorable situation - just the latest in a long series. As long as we enjoy free speech we will have these cynical greedy money grubbers. In my opinion it points up, again, the need for better designed and properly funded prevention efforts beginning at the earliest levels.

I would like this article to include a suggesiton for how we could take action to get Claire's to stop marketing this completely irresponsible and ridiculous merchandise to children. I look to Join Together to provide leadership on these kinds of issues!

I understand that Icing is part of Claires but you need to remember that the flasks are in Icing the collage and older group and not in claires the high school and under group, they are only in the grown up store that is why they are there and not claires. There is a difference in what each store sells, and girls don't want to go to an icing they want to go to a claires

Should NOT be sold in a store which underage girls shop...clearly there is no widespread corporate policy on this as one manager says she id's people and another girl said she was scolded by her manager for doing the same thing....shame on you claires for even thinking this is an alright product to have in your store....pull it out of there! I will not shop there and will discourage other moms to do the same.....yuck!!!!!!!!!

This is infuriating and appalling...clearly there is no hard and fast rule as to whether a girl gets "id'd" before purchasing such an item.....
