Wrigley-Area Bars Asked to Curtail Alcohol Sales on Cubs Game Days October 1, 2008
News Summary
Chicago Mayor Richard Daley has called on Wrigleyville bars to cut off alcohol sales after the 7th inning of Cubs home games, and some bar owners are going along with his directive, if reluctantly, the Chicago Tribune reported Sept. 30.
City officials said the idea was for bars to suspend sales voluntarily until the end of the game, just as ballparks like the Cubs' Wrigley Field do. If a "clinch" game goes to extra innings, however, city Alderman Thomas Tunney said the city agreed to allow owners to resume sales.
"I think [some bar owners are] willing to give it the benefit of the doubt and see if it has an effect," Tunney said.
"As the mayor has said repeatedly, it's about public safety in general and for the people in the neighborhood also," said Jacquelyn Heard, a spokeswoman for Mayor Daley. "We're very glad to see that the bar owners agree with us."
