Wisconsin Indoor-Smoking Bill Stalls March 13, 2008
News Summary
The Wisconsin legislature appears ready to wrap up the current session without voting on a bill that would ban smoking in most indoor public places in the state, the Associated Press reported March 12.
Neither the state Senate or Assembly has voted on the legislation, and the Senate will end its legislative session today. The measure appears to have died despite strong support from Gov. Jim Doyle; Wisconsin's Tavern League has been the main obstacle to passage.
The Tavern League wants bars to be exempt from the ban until July 2011. Supporters said that if the measure doesn't get a last-minute vote they would reintroduce it next year. "We're not giving up," said Rep. Steve Wieckert. "We're in for the long haul ... In the end, we will win."
