News Summary

Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. has signed a bill that bans sales of so-called "alcopop" drinks from grocery stores after initially objecting to the measure, the Salt Lake Tribune reported March 19.

The bill, SB11, limits sales of alcopops to state-run liquor stores; lawmakers said that the sweet alcoholic drinks are targeted to underage drinkers. The measure also increased the amount of alcohol that bars could pour into a drink but banned so-called "sidecars" -- shots of alcohol sold alongside weaker mixed drinks.

Huntsman previously had threatened to veto the bill, calling for a broader plan to liberalize the state's alcohol laws.
