News Summary

Alcoholic beverages should feature the same kind of graphic images and warnings found on tobacco products, according to members of the British Medical Association (BMA).

The Independent reported July 10 that delegates at the BMA's annual meeting in Edinburgh said that images of diseased livers should be displayed on beer bottles and cans and wine and liquor bottles. They also called for images to be posted in bars and for packages to display how many units of alcohol they contain.

The motion in support of the labels was approved by BMA delegates by a wide margin.

Given that the current UK alcohol strategy is strongly influenced by the industry with messages one every page such as 'More needs to be done to promote sensible drinking', the chances of that happening are about the same as snow in July. The government has made it clear that they have no intention of curtailing the massive advertising/sponsorship by the industry which portrays drinking as both glamorous and desirable.

I hate to tell you this, but the government doesn't allow the alcohol industry to continue their coniving advertising strategies-- WE DO!! We put the people in office who writes the legilation. If we don't like what they do FIRE THEM!! THat's what your vote is for. It's time we start making these changes and more important informing ourselves of the true power we have to actually do this!
