News Summary

Gay and lesbian teens are more likely to smoke cigarettes than straight teens, and the Ohio Department of Health is trying to find out why, the Associated Press reported Feb. 3.

The state agency plans to spend $60,000 on the study, using focus groups comprised of youths ages 12-20 from a gay teen youth center in Columbus. The money comes from a federal grant for preventing smoking among minority groups.

Ohio officials estimate that 40-60 percent of gay teens smoke, while the director of the Kaleidoscope Youth Center said that 60-70 percent of teens who visit the Columbus program are smokers.
