News Summary

Michigan has moved a step closer to banning smoking in all of the bars, restaurants and workplaces in the state, the Associated Press reported May 8.

An indoor-smoking bill that had cleared the state House in December was approved by the Michigan Senate on a 25-12 vote this week. Unlike the House bill, however, the Senate measure does not include exemptions for casinos and bingo halls, so the two houses of the legislature will have to work at a compromise.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm says she will sign an indoor-smoking ban into law.
