'Liquid Smoking' Skirts Smoking Ban October 27, 2008
News Summary
Smokers who can't light up at bars may be able to get their nicotine fix by drinking a new beverage dubbed 'Liquid Smoking,' the Telegraph reported Oct. 27.
The drink, which the Dutch manufacturer said does not contain nicotine, is comprised of a mix of South African pant roots that provides "a slight energizing effect, followed by a euphoric sense of calming and relaxation," according to suppliers.
Encouraged by the drink's popularity in the Netherlands since it went on sale last year, the company plans to introduce the product in Great Britain before Christmas.
A 275-ml can "will take the edge off of a need for nicotine for between one to four hours," said Martin Hartman, CEO of manufacturer United Drinks. "I think it will help people who feel the need for nicotine in bars, restaurants, long-haul flights and on the train."
However, some antismoking groups are concerned about how the product will be regulated. "Although we welcome anything which is a genuine alternative [to nicotine], many of these are totally unregulated and we only have the manufacturer's word about what they contain," said Amanda Sanford of Action on Smoking and Health. "We would be concerned about any health claims that are unsubstantiated, and at this stage we wouldn't encourage people to buy them."
