Iran May Execute Man for Chronic Drinking

News Summary

An Iranian man who has been punished three times for drinking alcohol in violation of Islamic strictures now faces the death penalty, Radio Free Europe reported Feb. 7.

The man, identified only as Moshen, was ruled to be a "hardened and incorrigible drinker" by a court in Tehran and sentenced to death.

An individual caught drinking alcohol four times can be put to death under Iran's interpretation of Islamic law. First offenses are usually punished by fines, jail time or flogging. "If someone drinks twice and is punished for it on each occasion, he should be executed on the third offense," said a judge at Tehran's criminal court, Jalil Jalili.

Iranian defense lawyers, on the other hand, say that executing people for drinking violates the nation's international treaty obligations, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

"According to the ninth article of the Iranian Civil Code, we can say that these [international] agreements are a part of domestic laws and cannot be ignored," said lawyer Mohammad Ali Dadkhah. "In this context, we can say that handing down the death penalty for drinking alcohol is questionable."

Thsi just goes to show us all The United States of America does not need to reconize any countrie that have no Human Rights laws. Just think what iran would do if they attack us. We need to remain vigilant on our stance on Human Rights

Ah yes, the United States, the great defender of human rights. Isn't that right Sterling? Ask the folks in Iraq. Or Afghanistan. Or Guantanamo Bay. Or Rikers Island. It's the U.S. which has a massive armada off the coast of Iran and threatening unprovoked nuclear attack, not the other way around.

Not once in this article was the United States mentioned. I think you both missed the point.

Ah yes, USA, great provider of health care and treatment to 8% of those who need it; celebrities and those with means! How many alcoholics and addicts do we allow to die in the streets and alleys of exposure and ODs. Jail would be a welcome respite! As long as they die out of sight, no problem, right? Aren't we the most sanctimonius, self righteous people on earth?

It would be better that we execute them Mr. Lubben? I think you should start recommending that to the people you consult for.

I would hate to live in a country which imposes their religious beliefs upon me. I am ashamed of the President, Vice President and our other leaders for making war on Iraq. Woe be unto those who oppress others. The US included.

As a practicing Muslim, I am disturbed when Islamic teachings are incorrectly codified into law. Islamic teachings prohibit consumption of alcohol (the prohibition was gradual and over several years), but punishment was not prescribed, and definitely not capital punishment. There are avenues of "rehabilitation" within the religion, but that the ultimate punishment (death) denies anyone from that potential, which is the reason I believe this is a misintrepretation of Islamic law by Iranian courts.

Not quite sure where people connected bashing the free country of america to the article above where people are beaten and executed for drinking. If you prefer that type of country, no one is stopping you from moving there. Be thankful for the freedom USA gives you to speak... if you spoke that way about Iran as a "citizen" of that country you'd be killed.

Sadly, untreated Alcoholism is a death sentence no matter what country of ignorance you were born into.
