News Summary

Smoking would be prohibited in all enclosed workplaces in Iowa, including bars, restaurants, and casinos, under legislation passed this week by the Iowa Senate, the Des Moines Register reported Feb. 28.

The vote was 29-21 in favor of the bill; the legislation now moves over to the Iowa House of Representatives for consideration.

"This bill is not a divisive tool for discriminating against those who choose to smoke, but an avenue to a healthier Iowa," said state Sen. Staci Appel. She and other Senate Democrats worked to ensure that casinos were not exempted from the legislation. "As our surrounding states pass legislation creating smoke-free environments in all public places and areas of work, we as Iowans cannot neglect the opportunity to protect the health of every citizen in our own state," she said.

Smoking would still be permitted in private homes, some hotel rooms, tobacco stores, and a few other indoor places, as well as outdoors.

The House version of the bill, passed on Feb. 19, would allow smoking in casinos, which Democratic leaders said was a necessary compromise to get enough votes for passage. If neither version is approved by both houses of the legislature, a committee will convene to work out differences in the legislation. "This bill's still got a course to go through and there will be compromises along the way," said Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal.

It is not about the health of every citizen in our state. It is about the money. How much did the casinos pay to have the law where people could smoke there. The law is urging people to gamble to make more money. Political garbage is the smoking ban. My husband had a heart attack 5 years ago and a quadruple bypass. His heart surgeon told him then that smoking did not cause his heart attack. He, (the surgeon) said " Smoking does not cause heart attacks or strokes. They are caused by the life style you lead and the food you eat. Second hand smoke is no more dangerous then being in a room with a lot of people and no windows or doors. you all exhale carbon dioxide. You quit smoking completely and you possibly get sick. If anything just cut back." My doctor asked me if I smoked. I told don't go there because I know the truth that smoking does not cause cancer or strokes. He told me he knew that but--get this--quote "I have to tell you that because I am in the medical profession." unquote. So see, it ia all a lie. It is just a way to get more money for the phamacuticals. Now ease up on the smoking and give us our rights back.

I feel that smoking should be baned everywhere, forever. I was a smoker until the ban went into effect, and it has help me to quit, and I feel so much better. I will support all smoking bans. Don't talk about the right to smoke, talk about the right to live a long healthy life.
