News Summary

Indiana lawmakers failed to pass legislation that would have banned smoking in most public places in the state, the Indianapolis Star reported Jan. 23.

The measure died in a House committee without ever coming up for a vote. House Public Policy Committee Chairman Rep. Trent VanHaaften said time just ran out for the bill during the current legislative session. Sponsor Rep. Charlie Brown said he would refile the bill next year.

The bill died despite the fact that supporters packed the committee room, including Bruce Hetrick, who said that secondhand smoke killed his wife, Pam Klein, a nonsmoker and former business editor of the Indianapolis Star.

Hetrick called on lawmakers to pass the bill and save other Indiana residents "from the slow-motion homicide that killed Pam."

Every morning I wake to feel as if hit by a truck. I don't feel this way when I am not inhaling 9 hours worth of second hand smoke in the bar in which I work. Chicago and New York got the clue, why are we behind the times here?

I wash my clothes in a public laundry. The two laundries in my town are patronized by smokers. I had a bout of cancer several years ago and don't like to be exposed to second hand smoke. Yes, I can walk away from the smoke with my two legs, but at the expense of not washing my laundry. So, guess what Shawn, I made uncomfortable in a public environment that has facilities I NEED to use...the alternative of which is I get to wear filthy clothing, again making me uncomfortable. That sounds fair to me doesn't it to you? So, I will smell your stinky smoke but don't bitch when you end up smelling a stinky me!
