News Summary

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama says he has quit smoking with the help of a nicotine-replacement aid,  the Associated Press reported Feb. 29.

Obama had admitted to be an smoker earlier in his campaign, but said that he has been able to abstain despite a grueling schedule of primaries, rallies and debates.

"I've been chewing on this Nicorette, which tastes like you're chewing on ground pepper -- but it does help," Obama said during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Obama credited his wife, Michelle, for helping him keep his resolve: she told him she would only agree to a run for the presidency if he quit smoking. "I had been sneaking three cigarettes, four cigarettes a day for a while, and she said if you're going to do this you've got to stop -- precisely because the stress was going to increase, and it'll just get worse," Obama said. "So that's an example of my wife making me a better man once again."

I think that's great. It took me 7 years to completely quit and I never ran for president. Let's "accentuate the positive" shall we?

fast eddie, I'm sure he still snorts coke and smokes a j in his bus when he feels the need. (sarcasm) His friends from his late teen years have been hounded relentlessly by the press about the amount of drugs he consumed. All have said his use is in the past. Has our current president stopped his drug use yet?

Quitting is easy, I've done it hundreds of times. After 35 years of enslavement to nicotine, I stopped smoking nine years ago by simply giving up the fight-- applying the 1st Step strategy of "surrender."

Legally, when someone is chewing Nicorette, they stopped smoking, but he is still addicted to nicotine. And, since he still smokes, he did not quit, and is sending the wrong message that if you cut down, you have quit. If you still use, you are still addicted.
