Hopes Fade for Passage of FDA Tobacco Bill

News Summary

Daunted by the prospect of a long debate and a veto promise by President Bush, advocates say a bill that would give the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) power to regulate tobacco products is unlikely to pass this year, the Associated Press reported Sept. 10.

The bill was passed in the U.S. House of Representatives and has the support of a majority of the Senate. But time is running out in the current legislative session as the federal elections draw closer. A spokesperson for key legislative backer Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) said the measure faces an uphill fight to passage this year.

However, William V. Corr, executive director of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, said passage is "inevitable." Unlike Bush, both GOP presidential candidate John McCain and Democrat nominee Barack Obama support FDA regulation.

It is about time for the government to regulate tobacco as a drug. This is the #1 preventable cause of death. I'd like to suggest a great grassroots campaign in the future for people to contact their federal legislative representatives.

Putting the tobacco industry in the hands of the FDA is not going to keep our children from smoking. You are just wasting the taxpayers money. It isn't all about health anyway. It is all about the money. Under age smokers is why they do it. It is illegal for them therefore it is fun. Just like drinking. It's fun because it is illegal. Get your head out of your butts and start using common sense.

TO "oh really" - Currently there is no federal regulation of tobacco; hence, no "huge gov't" bureaucracy (this is the correct spelling. Regulation of the US's #1 cause of preventable illness and death is essential if we are to keep people in this country healthy and reduce our ever-rising health care costs. Also, to "Jason Blanchette" - the current FDA Chief is a Bush appointee. Bush has said he will veto the bill if it is passed. The FDA chief doesn't really have a choice about support or not - he's beholden to his 'appointer'. LA Didier

"forget about the health of americans?" i'm sorry, but you cant really be foolish enough to beleive that moving control of tobacco from one huge government burocracy to another is going to have any effect at all on the health of americans, can you?

The FDA Chief opposes the bill. No one knows more about what the FDA should and shouldn't be doing than the FDA.
