News Summary

The latest "robocall" sponsored by the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee features former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani criticizing Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama for his position on mandatory minimum sentencing, CNN reported Oct. 23.

"You need to know that Barack Obama opposes mandatory prison sentences for sex offenders, drug dealers, and murderers," Giuliani says in the automated phone call. "It's true, I read Obama's words myself."

"With priorities like these, we just can't trust the inexperience and judgment of Barack Obama and his liberal allies," according to Giuliani.

Obama supports "reforming mandatory minimum prison sentences," according to his website.

"Every leading expert body in criminal justice has opposed the use of mandatory minimum sentences, including the Sentencing Commission, the Judicial Conference, the American Bar Association, and leading criminal justice scholars," according to the Obama site.

America has the largest prison population in the world. It is estimated of that 80% or those incarcerated are in for drug or alcohol related offenses (alcohol is highly related to violent crime). Policy's such as mandatory prison sentencing effect the non-violent offender as well as the violent offender. Thank God a bi-partisan effort is being made to review America's prison and sentencing system that is unfair, impractical and costly in more than ways monetary. http://thinkoutsidethecage2.blogspot.com/2008/10/americans-oppose-mandatory-minimums.html

Let's leave it all up to the judges. They do such a great job now, just ask your local law enforcement officer. Crime is running rampant in this country because of the lack of enforcement of the laws by the majority of judges. You must ask yourself why don't other countires have the crime rates we do?

Before you laud the US for its low crime rates, Tim, check the facts. The US has HIGH crime rates for many crimes. And I am not talking arrests or convictions, or even reported crimes -- i am talking dta from crime victim surveys, the best gauge of actual crime rates. The US surveys 50,000 people every year to get the data -- use them!!
