Few N.J. Residents Support Lower Drinking Age, Survey Finds September 16, 2008
News Summary
A new statewide poll found that only 18 percent of New Jersey residents approve of lowering the state's drinking age to 18, the Associated Press reported Sept. 15.
Seventy-six percent of those surveyed said the drinking age should remain at age 21.
Fairleigh Dickinson-PublicMind conducted the poll after 129 college presidents nationally (including three in New Jersey) signed a letter suggesting that states consider lowering the drinking age as a strategy for addressing student binge drinking.
The survey was conducted by telephone in early September and has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
