News Summary

Budweiser is the "official beer" of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and now some state legislators want to make the Anheuser-Busch brew the official beer of the state of Missouri, too.

The Associated Press reported March 10 that Missouri state Rep. Curt Dougherty has introduced a bill designating Budweiser as the state's official beer. Anheuser-Busch is based in St. Louis, and Dougherty says that the designation could help boost tourism to the state.

"We've got a state dinosaur, a state frog, a state reptile, a state flower, a state nut, but no one has given a thought to a company that's been in Missouri for many, many years and is bringing prosperity to our state and manufacturing a product in our state that many people enjoy," he said.

Twenty-seven others states have designated official drinks, but few are alcoholic. Alabama, however, named Conecuh Ridge Alabama Fine Whiskey as the official state spirit in 2004. "Just because it's an alcoholic beverage doesn't mean we should stick our heads in the sand," said Dougherty.

As long as they make very substantial donations to MADD, NCADA, MACA, and all of the other NPO organizations in the State of Missouri that must deal with the inherant problems that come from the unwise use, misuse, dependencies on and additions to the alcohol contained in their product. When I say "SUBSTANTIAL" that is exactly what I mean. It should be countable in the millions of dollars and not just token amounts. They need to contribute like they really mean to DO A GOOD. Quite frankly, we all know that they owe use this debt of gratitude.

Wonder how much campaign money Rep Dougherty gets from Budweiser?

Brilliant and funny, Gerrit! But you forgot Alcoholism as the Official State Mental Health Problem.

Brilliant! Check out Dougherty's photo on his web page. All he needs is a can of Bud, and he could be a billboard for Anheuser-Busch. I love Gerrit's comments. The only alteration I'd make is that the Official State Cigarette should be GPs.

Great Idea! And New Jersey could have a State Condom! Trojan brand, which accounts for 70% of all sales in the US, was started in New Jersey almost a century ago, by Young Rubber Co., and is still owned by a New Jersey based company. And how about a state gun for Mass., (Smith & Wesson) and a state treatment philosophy for Minnesota (Smith and Wilson).

Possibilities for future consideration are Liver Cirrhosis as the Official State Disease, Drunk Driving as the Official State Crime, The Kegger as the Official State Teen Recreation, Meth as the Official State Drug, Marlboro as the Official State Cigarette....It's too late to make the Clydesdale the Official State Horse since that has already been claimed for the issouri Fox Trotting Horse, but the Dalmation (that sits on the beerwagon) could become the Official State Dog.
