Alcohol Not a Drug, Many Australians Believe April 1, 2008
News Summary
Alcohol is not a drug, according to about one-third of Australians polled -- and 43 percent of those ages 18-29 -- the Melbourne Herald-Sun reported April 1.
The survey from the Australian National Council on Drugs also found high levels of concern about the consequences of drinking, however, including the risk of violence and property damage. Binge drinking among 18- to 29-year-olds also was cited as a concern by 79 percent of those polled. "Australia has a massive problem with alcohol, and this survey shows that the community is aware of that and is concerned about it," said council chairman John Herron.
Strong support also was expressed for restrictions on alcohol advertising and increased public education about excessive drinking. Few respondents were aware of moderate drinking guidelines or knew where to go for help with drinking problems, the survey found.
