4/20 Goes Mainstream April 22, 2008
News Summary
April 20 has become a national holiday of sorts for marijuana smokers, and the event and the term "420" have become part of the commercial mainstream, the Chicago Tribune reported April 20.
A trio of documentaries, webcasts, concerts, and promotions for the movie "Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay" all either explore the 420 phenomenon or exploit it to make cash. Several 420 parties are being planned as part of the Harold & Kumar marketing strategy, for example, showing that the event has grown out of its grassroots origins.
"Anyone wanting to make and sell a 420-related product tends to add the number 420 anywhere they can," said Rob Griffin, webmaster of the online 420 Magazine.
The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy now issues alerts on 420, and the term has become synonymous with an invitation to get high.
