Tobacco Bill Amended to Include Graphic Warnings July 26, 2007
News Summary
An amendment to the Senate's FDA tobacco-regulation bill would require all cigarette packs to include graphic warnings about the dangers of smoking, Fox News reported July 25.
Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) sponsored the amendment, saying, "These warnings convey the truth in no uncertain terms." Enzi, however, opposes the broader bill, saying it falls short on smoking prevention.
The warnings would be similar to those now required in Canada. A total of 52 Senators have cosponsored the FDA bill.
Meanwhile, a Senate committee rejected an amendment by Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) that called for delaying implementation of the bill until its cost and impact on FDA could be studied. "FDA is having a very difficult time performing its current responsibilities. To add such an enormous responsibility such as regulating tobacco simply doesn't make sense," said Hatch.
