Tennessee Lawmakers Discuss Medical Marijuana

News Summary

Opponents and supporters of medical marijuana testified during a hearing in the Tennessee legislature this week, the Associated Press reported Nov. 13.

The Tennessee legislature rejected a medical-marijuana bill last year, but the House Health and Human Resources Committee this week heard testimony on a measure sponsored by Rep. Sherry Jones (D-Nashville). Opponents included doctors who said marijuana is not effective medicine and groups like the Family Action Council of Tennessee, which portrayed medical marijuana as a front for drug legalization.

"This is not about making marijuana legal across the state," said Jones. "This is strictly for medical reasons, only to help people feel better. Any suggestion that there might be something hidden in the legislation is absurd."

White House Office of National Drug Control Policy official David Murray also appeared before the committee to express opposition to the bill, while representatives of the Marijuana Policy Project spoke in favor.

The marijuana laws in this country are prudish obserd and rediculous!! Look around the world and see all the country's that have legalized it and here we sit back in the stonage when it comes to our beliefs and ideas. The only reason Marijuana is illegal in this country is because its not taxable and the government makes to much money on it being illegal. It would stop the over crouding in our prisons. It would let good hard working American people to get relief the natural way. I also believe that if it was legal for people to obtain Cannabis for medical purposes they wouldnt be forced to participate in illegal activities for relief. Its time to boot these old prude republican politicians out of washington and get some new young blood in there to get things rolling!

I was in a very serious car accident a year and three months ago and I have been on various perscriptions ever since. I HATE taking all of these unnatural mediations for a whole list of things, almost all of which can be helped by marijuana. It is upsetting to know that I am not granted the opertunity to treat my body naturally with one drug and eliminate the four other unnatural drugs i'm currently perscribed. I think that as a human, a natural beaning of this planet, I should have the right to have access to another a natural substance of this planet, especially when it's for the betterment of my body. I think that our government needs to open their minds, look at the facts and perhaps experience the effects of Mrs. Mary Jane themselves.

I use marijuana for several health reasons. I have mental health problems, chronic pain from 2 neck surgeries,1 lower back surgery and also seizures. I also take perscribed medications for all my problems. I feel that using marijuana in conjuction with my other medications helps tremendously. I think marijuana should be legal for medical use only.

Yes i think that it is wrong for them to let alcohol legal and not marijuana.I have never heard anyone dying from smoking and driving.Anybody who has every smoked has is only paranoid but the high.I have occassional migraines and when they come they are really bad,but usually the only way to help the pain go away so it isnt throbbing so bad is to smoke marijuana.Nothing else helps the pain go away and i have tried everything.I just dont understand why the governament is ok with people drinking and driving and killing people and getting violent and so forth, but i dont see the problem with letting them legalize marijuana for medical purposes when maybe the only side effects are:your calm, maybe parinoid driving, causes someone to want to eat,and eases pain instantly. So what is so wrong with someone who has cancer or glaucoma,or someone in pain from any reason medically wrong with you to want some fast instant relief.
