News Summary

Another traditional tobacco state is on the verge of passing an indoor-smoking ban, with legislation now on the desk of Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, the Associated Press reported June 1.

The bill, passed 84-10 in the state House of Representatives and 28-2 in the Senate, would ban smoking in most workplaces but exempt bars, private clubs, and companies with three or fewer workers. Bredesen had advocated a more comprehensive ban but said he would sign the measure into law.

The legislation was sponsored by House Agriculture Chairman Stratton Bone, a former tobacco farmer. House Majority Leader Gary Odom called the measure a first step.
