News Summary

The U.S. Surgeon General's new "Call to Action" on underage drinking includes a number of policy recommendations aimed at reducing college drinking, including ending events sponsored by alcoholic-beverage companies.

AdWeek reported March 7 that Surgeon General Kenneth Moritsugu also recommended an end to alcohol ads in college publications.

Meanwhile, the Chronicle of Higher Education reported March 7 that the Call to Action recommended that colleges restrict or eliminate alcohol sales at sporting events, reinstate Friday classes (eliminated by some schools where students skip classes to get a head start on weekend partying), and work with local communities to prevent house parties where alcohol is served to underage youth.
