News Summary

Magazines that contain tobacco ads will be banned from school libraries in Auburn, N.Y., under a resolution approved by the local school board, the Auburn Citizen reported Jan. 24.

The board approved a measure suggested by a group called Reality Check, which advocates for changes in magazine advertising. Magazines like Time, Sports Illustrated and People produce special editions without tobacco ads, but other publications found in school libraries, like Popular Science and Ebony, do not.

Reality Check contends that tobacco companies shouldn't be allowed to advertise to students in school. The National Association of Attorneys General has urged the publication of more magazines that exclude tobacco ads.
