News Summary

Possession of the hallucinogenic plant salvia divinorum is now a felony offense in Illinois, the Associated Press reported Dec. 26.

As of Jan. 1, a new Illinois law puts salvia possession -- which is not even a crime in most other states, or under federal law -- in the same class as heroin or LSD. "We decided to move forward rather than waiting for someone to be killed because of it," said state Rep. Dennis Reboletti, who sponsored the law outlawing the herb.

Prior to the law's implementation, some Illinois residents were reportedly buying up stocks of salvia from local merchants.

This is a little bit crazy. I mean, the herb is used by some religions to look into themselves and for meditation. So it seems that it will be harder for those who do use this herb for spiritual purposes. Yes, it is very horrible that people would abuse Salvia Divinorum, but why does everyone have to be punished. I do feel the same with other herbs that have stamped illegal. Just a friendly word from a spiritual believer.

This is a victimless crime. That's like a debt without creditors, it doesn't exist. Someone staying home smoking salvia should not be punished anymore than the person sitting at home having a beer. Alcohol impairs judgment, leads to violence, and harms your liver. This is not a health issue, it's an issue of the government overreaching into our home.
