News Summary

Tyrone Brown, jailed for life at age 17 after failing a drug test while on probation, was freed from a Texas prison last week after serving 17 years, the Associated Press reported March 15.

Brown was put on probation after taking part in an armed robbery. When he tested positive for marijuana, Judge Keith Dean sentenced him to life in prison. Brown had no prior criminal offenses.

Brown was freed after receiving a conditional pardon from Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Terms include living with his mother, reporting to a parole officer, getting a job and attending therapy.

"I didn't believe this day was going to come," said Brown upon being released.

I would like to know what kind of drug test is the most reliable, hair, urine or blood. I would also like to know how far back can drugs be detected?

Depends on the drug and the test. Hair tests are the most expensive and reliable, and can go back 6 months for just about any testable drug. Urinalysis is most common, and is better than blood tests. Marijuana can be detected for 2-5 weeks, maybe even more in very heavy users with this.

Cocaine, methamphetamines/Ecstacy, opiates and barbiturates are all water-soluble, and wash out much faster. 3-5 days for them. Psychedelics get through the body too fast and leave few traces to detect with any method. That said, this story is wrong. A life-sentence for a 17 year old because he smoked pot. . . Was smoking worse than the robbery?
