News Summary

Pharmaceutical firm Reckitt Benckiser -- which makes the anti-addiction medication Suboxone -- has launched a new MySpace health-information site focused on addiction to opioid-based painkillers, called Addiction411.

The company said the website will include information on the dangers associated with opioid abuse, warning signs of addiction, an interactive addiction questionnaire, information on treatment options, a treatment locator, and other resources.

"We are proud to be the first pharmaceutical company to partner with MySpace to provide their members with vital healthcare information," said Reckitt president Shaun Thaxter. "Dependence on opioid painkillers and heroin is a major public-health crisis, and the rise of MySpace as a leading online community makes it an ideal way to share important information about this hidden epidemic. Our hope is that providing the MySpace generation information on opioid dependence will help prevent them from becoming dependent, or will allow them to find appropriate medical help for themselves, their friends, or their families."

My husband is taking Suboxone, and it definitely IS a "miracle drug" in that he is more 'normal' and functions best when taking it daily. If he runs out early or takes too much, and ends up in withdrawals, he is a royal pain to be around...the worst part is the cost of the monthly doc visits and pills without insurance, and there has to be some kind of relief to those who are on a limited income! Unfortunately my husband will probably have to take "sub" the rest of his life, causing us to spend money on his addiction constantly--and it makes ME very angry that he cannot live without THIS drug now...like trading one substance for another legally! But it IS cheaper than the alternative of street drugs and prices, and consequences arising from that. Just wish the stuff was cheaper!!!
