Ore. Requires Fire-Safe Cigarettes April 19, 2007
News Summary
A bill signed into law by Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski requires tobacco companies to only sell "fire-safe" cigarettes in the state, the Oregon Statesman Journal reported April 18.
"Today we are taking a major step to increase the safety of all Oregonians from accidental fires due to unattended cigarettes," Kulongoski said. A former lawmaker who also is a retired firefighter was among those who lobbied for the measure.
Oregon becomes the seventh state to pass a law requiring that only self-extinguishing cigarettes be sold; New York was the first.
