New U.K. Alcohol Strategy Includes Adult Drinkers June 6, 2007
News Summary
Kids are the typical targets for campaigns to prevent problem drinking, but a new strategy unveiled in Great Britain also includes a focus on older adults who drink at home, the BBC reported June 5.
Health officials say they want to change the English drinking culture and denormalize drunkenness and antisocial behavior. Health minister Caroline Flint said the campaign will focus on "people, adults, who on a very regular basis are probably drinking twice the amount that is recommended."
The plan also calls for a review of happy hours and other drinking promotions that may lead to overconsumption of alcohol.
"It is unacceptable for people to use alcohol and urinate in the street, vomit and carry on," said Home Office Minister Vernon Coaker. "It's almost regarded as acceptable to drink to get drunk and we want to change that attitude."
