One in Four NYC Men Are Binge Drinkers, Study Finds April 19, 2007
News Summary
Adult men are three times more likely to be binge drinkers than women, with one in four saying they consumed five or more drinks at one sitting in the past month, according the a study from the New York City Department of Health.
ABC-7 News reported April 18 that the department's annual community health study found that white and Hispanic men were more likely to be binge drinkers than blacks or Asians, and that white women were bigger binge drinkers than Hispanics, blacks or Asians. Women were half as likely to binge drink as men, however.
Still, binge-drinking rates in New York were lower than in other parts of the country: nationally, 31 percent of men are monthly binge drinkers, and the city's overall binge-drinking rate -- 14 percent -- was lower than the national average of 24 percent.
