News Summary

Utah has the lowest smoking rate in the U.S., with just 9.5 percent of adults and 7.5 percent of youths saying they smoke, the Deseret Morning News reported Sept. 6.

A study from the Utah Department of Health noted that the rate was the lowest since the state began tracking smoking in 1989. Adult smoking in Utah is 68 percent lower than the national average, while youth smoking is a third of the national rate.

Implementation of smokefree-spaces legislation was cited as one reason for the continued decline of smoking in Utah.
