News Summary

More than one-third of Irish residents are binge drinkers, the highest rate in the European Union, according to a new study.

The BBC reported March 14 that the new Eurobarometer study found that Finland (27 percent) had the second-highest rate of binge drinking -- defined as consuming five or more alcoholic drinks at a sitting -- followed by Great Britain (24 percent) and Denmark (23 percent).

The binge-drinking rate in Ireland was 34 percent.

Only 2 percent of residents of Italy and Greece reported bingeing, however, and the binge-drinking rate in Portugal was just 4 percent.

Binge drinking was more prevalent among men and among 15- to 24-year-olds.

In my experience, Irish Americans also have a high rate of binge drinking. I chose my career, preventing alcoholism and drug dependence, because of the many people in our family who have alchol related problems.
