First-Time Drug Possession Could Be Decriminalized in Mexico February 14, 2007
News Summary
The government of Mexican President Felipe Calderon has launched a major crackdown on violent drug gangs, but also is proposing to decriminalize first-time possession of illicit drugs, Reuters reported Feb. 13.
A legislative proposal calls for decriminalizing possession of 2 grams or less of marijuana and small amounts of drugs like cocaine and methamphetamine. The rules would only apply to first-time offenders.
Mexico's Senate has passed the measure; it is similar to legislation proposed in 2006 by former President Vincente Fox, albeit with lower limits on possession of drugs. The Fox bill was roundly criticized by the U.S. government and later withdrawn.
"This isn't legalization," said National Action Party Sen. Alejandro Gonzalez.. "We're going to go much harder against drug dealers."
