News Summary

An Alexandria, Va., restaurant wants to cool off summer patrons with ice pops made from beer, but the novelty has run afoul of state liquor laws, the Associated Press reported June 22.

Rustico Restaurant is selling $4, six-ounce beer popsicles and larger, $6 beer cones in flavors like Raspbeer-y, Plum, and Fudgesicle. But the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) said that under state law, beer must be served in its original container or served immediately to customers once poured out.

"If we're talking about taking a beer and pouring it from a bottle or a keg into some sort of mold and freezing it, then that product is not legal," said Philip Disharoon, head of the Alexandria division of the Virginia ABC.

A restaurant spokesperson said that the Rustico beer manager is looking at ways to comply with the law without abandoning the beer pops.
