Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard is backing a law that suspends the tobacco-sales rights of retailers who repeatedly sell tobacco products to children, the East Valley Tribune reported June 7.

Goddard said that a Tucson ordinance should be a model for other communities; the law calls for retailers who sell to a minor more than twice in a 12-month period to pull all tobacco products from their shelves and not sell them to customers for a 24-hour period.

Goddard said that a recent series of tobacco compliance checks found that sales to minors were lower in Tucson than in other cities in Arizona, hinting that the law was acting as a deterrent for retailers.
