News Summary

The Illinois House last week approved a ban on billboard ads for alcopop drinks within 500 feet of schools, churches, parks and amusement parks, the Chicago Sun Times reported June 2.

The 115-0 vote targets ads for products like Smirnoff Ice and also includes a ban on advertising the products at athletic events with a primarily underage audience.

The Illinois Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Association (IADDA) called the measure part of a crackdown on alcohol-industry marketing of alcopops to underage drinkers.

"Youth, particularly young girls, report they prefer the sweet taste of alcopops over the taste of beer or hard liquor, making youth prime targets for an industry-driven alcopops marketing campaign similar to the tobacco industry's Joe Camel campaign," said IADDA CEO Sara Moscato.

The measure now heads to the Senate.
