Web Photos Lead to Student Drinking Penalties February 10, 2006
News Summary
Sharp-eyed parents who reported online pictures of underage drinking have landed some Michigan high-school students in hot water, the Associated Press reported Feb. 8.
School officials are considering disciplinary action against up to 20 students at East Grand Rapids High School after parents spotted photos of underage drinking parties posted on blogs and personal web pages at Xanga, Myspace, and Facebook.
"This is an issue that every high school in the country deals with," said school superintendent James Morse. "Kids will be kids, and they make mistakes. But they have to be held accountable."
Students identified in the pictures were suspended two weeks from school sports, a dance, and other activities. Some parents have appealed the suspensions.
The parties did not take place on school property, but the drinking still violated school policies that apply to students involved in extracurricular activities.
