Walgreens Praised for Drug Tracking System July 13, 2006
News Summary
An electronic database designed by the Walgreens drugstore chain, used to track sales of medications that can be used to make methamphetamine, is being praised by the Illinois Attorney General, the Munster (Ind.) Times reported July 3.
AG Lisa Madigan said the system has been effective in enforcing laws limiting the amount of drugs containing ephedrine and pseudoephedrine that can be sold to customers. The computerized tracking replaced paper records that were considered ineffective.
Walgreens customers who buy the targeted drugs must provide ID and sign a log; employees then enter customer and sales information into the system. The improved recordkeeping allows Walgreens to track drug sales its entire network of stores nationwide.
