University of Texas at Austin Named Top U.S. Party School August 22, 2006
News Summary
The annual Princeton Review named the University of Texas at Austin the nation's biggest party school, ranking it second in use of liquor, third in beer consumption, and 13th in use of marijuana, the Associated Press reported Aug. 21.
Other schools where use of alcohol and other drugs ranked high included Penn State, West Virginia University, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Brigham Young University was tabbed as the nation's most sober school for the ninth year in a row.
This was the first time that UT-Austin was named the top party school, and school officials said that the ranking may relate to the Texas Longhorns winning the NCAA Division I football national championships last year.
"I know there were a lot of good parties here after we won the national football championship, and I'm going to guess that a lot of the kids who filled out the survey remembered those parties," said UT spokesman Don Hale.
Student body president Danielle Rugoff praised UT-Austin's rich social life and commitment to helping students make mature decisions about alcohol and other drug use. The Lambda Phi Epsilon fraternity at the school was decertified until 2011 after a freshman died of alcohol poisoning in a hazing incident.
