News Summary

The state of Texas has stopped sending undercover officers into bars to look for drunks, the Associated Press reported April 13.

The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, facing harsh public criticism, said it had suspended the enforcement effort. Previously, officials had justified the operation by saying that state laws against public drunkenness don't end at the barroom door.

The program is now under review, said Texas ABC spokesperson Carolyn Beck, who added that the suspension gives the agency "time to sift through all the information we've received ... and determine the best way to proceed."
