Tenn. Lawmakers Move to Ban Salvia Use April 27, 2006
News Summary
Consumption of the common herb saliva divinorum would be banned under a proposed Tennessee law that would still let the plant be used in decorative gardens, the Knoxville News-Sentinel reported April 14.
The state Senate voted to ban consumption of salvia, which is a powerful hallucinogen; the herb is legal under federal drug laws and is sold locally in Tennessee as well as over the Internet. The bill introduced by Sen. Tim Burchett (R-Knoxville) made producing or distributing salvia a felony punishable by up to 12 years in prison, but an amendment lowered the offense to a Class A misdemeanor.
The measure now goes to the state House for consideration. Only Louisiana currently bans salvia, but the Delaware legislature is considering similar legislation.
